Poland: The area of blueberries has doubled in five years

The high prices and the strong demand for blueberries are offering the producers of this fruit excellent future expectations. According to figures from the Institute of Agricultural Economics of Poland, the total area of blueberries in Poland has doubled in the last five years. Currently, these fruits are grown on a surface of more than 7.000 hectares, while, in 2002, there were only 1.000 hectares.

With an 23% of the European harvest, Poland is the largest producer of blueberries on the continent and the third largest in the world (behind the US and Canada). The Polish production is about 13.000 tons per year, of which they are exported abroad between an 80% and an 90%, according to estimates. Thanks to their healthy image, Polish blueberries can be found in more and more countries: in Western Europe (especially in Great Britain), but also in Malaysia, Singapore and Japan, where the diversification of markets contributes greatly to their success. Due to the growing demand and despite the high investment costs in production, its cultivation is still profitable, which is expected to increase the production surface.
