Mexico: Jalisco is a leader in the production of raspberries and blueberries

With an important expansion in the field of Jalisco, this entity holds the leadership in the production of raspberries and blueberries, informed the head of the Department of Rural Development of Jalisco (Seder), Hector Padilla Gutiérrez.

The official explained that from January to October, 2016 Jalisco increased the production of raspberries by 67,3 percent at an annual rate, going from 22.829 tons to 38.192 tons.

While nationally the raspberry production was 54. 332 tons, with which Mexico was placed as the fifth world producer.

He said that the raspberry producing states are 8; and from January to October of 2016, those that contributed more than 98 percent of the national volume were Jalisco with 38.192 tons; Baja California, 9.941 tons, and Michoacán, 6.180 tons.

Padilla Gutiérrez indicated that in the case of strawberries or berries 2016 was closed with 1.300 additional hectares to those of 2015. This segment, he said, in simple terms, each hectare is transformed into 100.000 dollars (in its commercial value). "And it gives us, therefore, 100.000 dollars for 1.300 hectares, something like 130 million dollars additional to the value that we brought last year (2015). Successfully entering new markets. He also recalled that last year the entry of Jalisco strawberries to other important markets in Asia, such as Singapore, largely due to the increase in air connectivity in the state of Jalisco.

The official stressed that the impact of berries has been evidenced in the leading municipalities in plantations such as Zapotlan El Grande, Tuxpan, Zapotiltic, Sayula, Tala, Jocotepec, Tuxcueca, Tapalpa, Atotonilco, Tototlan, Mazamitla, Mascota and Zacoalco de Torres .

As an example, he spoke about the case of Jocotepec, where 5.000 jobs were generated in the harvesting period of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, which represents an important economic benefit in favor of agricultural workers and the commercial and service sectors.

Jalisco is a national leader in the production of raspberries and blueberries; second of blackberry and fourth place of strawberry. The availability of berries in Jalisco already makes its influence felt in the regional cuisine and drinks.
