The work agenda of Ramón Achurra Larraín

The newly elected president of the National Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile, Fedefruta, Ramón Achurra Larraín, has already determined the four axes that he will develop in his management, which are to achieve first an improvement in labor relations, observing what happens with the Labor Reform in process and resuming the work table with the different unions that started in 2007, to approach, implement and improve the relationship with the labor world.

The second thing he enumerates in his concerns is to manage before the Banks, the Corfo and other institutions, the renegotiation of credits for those producers that have been hit by climate change in their productions, "we do not ask for anything for free," he says, adding that It will also be in charge of refinancing to make way for a varietal replacement of plantings, since most of them are old and worn. "In general, this replacement must reach 5% of crops and has a cost of USD30.000 per hectare, which is very expensive for us," he says.

His third concern is in the phytosanitary aspect, and in this area his intention is to achieve a close working relationship with the Agricultural and Livestock Service, SAG, for the care and prevention of diseases and the fight against pests.

"Cranberries, for example, have very special problems, they already had problems with the US last year with the Lobesia botrana, we must prevent markets like the US and others from forbidding us to export our products, "says the new president of Fedefruta.

Ramón Achurra, finally addresses his concern to the water problem and raises the issue of ownership of the resource: "I am in favor of removing the rights to anyone who does not occupy the water, no matter who the owner is" assures with conviction, and adds regarding the role of the State that "Water from our rivers must be prevented from reaching the sea", and asks to establish plans for the construction of dams or reservoirs that allow "harvest" the water to be used for agricultural use.

This Monday he was received along with his board of directors by the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Furche, and after the meeting he declared that "We address the issues that concern the fruit sector, such as strengthening plant protection, increasing productivity and refinancing the sector, after a very difficult season due to a hot winter, a humid spring and rains at the height of the harvest".

For his part, Minister Furche said after the meeting that "We are addressing a specific agenda that we have been developing with Fedefruta for some time, which basically involves productivity, labor relations, energy and water resources issues, for which we have agreed on some work procedures".

report_170516_2Ramón Achurra, among his many activities, is also a producer of blueberries and maintains a field of 40 hectares of crops in the Purranque area. Apparently, it is the first producer of blueberries that reaches the presidency of Fedefruta.
