"We must aim for the uniformity of our fruit and for this we must also point to the uniformity of the industry"

Year after year, the world of fruit growing is renewed and updated with respect to the results and evaluations of last season. The new technologies that appear to the market, the new competitors that emerge, or the fluctuations of the markets, are some of the variables that must be periodically observed and analyzed to rectify, in the perspective that the future season will be better in productivity and marketing. .

It is necessary to collect the information that exists and share it to level the industry according to obtain similar results. This information is in the research centers, academics and experts have it, so you have to gather them to listen to them and then apply their knowledge. It is the objective of the seminars or special meetings where the different actors of the agrofrutícola industry come together to socialize their experiences and results.

In this plan we interviewed Jorge Esquivel, manager of Blueberries Consulting and one of the organizers of the 3 ° International Seminar, "Chile, leader of the blueberry industry: New competitors, new challenges, new strategies", which will be held on April 28 at the Monticello Center.

George

Mr. Esquivel, how is this seminar different from the 1st one that you held in 2014 at Monticello itself ...

The first thing that I must clarify is the same thing that I said in 2014, and that I will always repeat, and that is that technical-commercial seminars cannot have a pre-established date or place of realization, it is the circumstances that determine them, and those circumstances are product of the objective facts that are taking place in the different areas of the industry, directly or indirectly.

That said, I must say that the differences are many, because in 2014 the program was designed to give a comprehensive and up-to-date look at the production of cranberry cultivation, included keynote presentations, control of Botrytis, strategies to face the presence of Lobesia botrana, pruning, vegetable nutrition, postharvest and other aspects that are still important to obtain good production levels, but today the topics are others, and they go on to acquire knowledge and information that allow to obtain fruit of good quality and condition that allows us to cross the oceans and reach the most important markets without suffering major changes. Today we have to be more attentive to new competitors, who have learned from us and who are developing rapidly. Today we focus on consolidating our industry by extending the concept of business to the garden itself, we must professionalize the world of producers. We must aim at the uniformity of our fruit and for this we must also point to the uniformity of the industry, in other subjects are those that summon us, and these are in a superior level to the 2014.

Jorge Esquivel puts the emphasis on the professionalization of all levels of the blueberry industry and considers that it is in the field, in the productive aspect, where there is the greatest backwardness. On the other side of this scale, the role played by the exporters, grouped in the Association of Chilean Exporters, Asoex, drives the Chilean product and takes it to the most varied and distant markets. It also highlights the role of ProChile, which has become the permanent and indispensable support for the development and dissemination of Chilean products abroad.

Finally, he emphasizes again and emphasizes that as these sectors mentioned above, which have professionalized their work every day more, producers must advance in the use of technology, knowledge and management, which allows them to reach the same levels of efficiency of such way to achieve a final product according to the development of the industry.
