Chile: Cranberries, strawberries and raspberries lead the increase in organic exports

According to a report prepared by the commercial area of ​​ProChile-Direcon, during the 2016 year, Chilean exports of organic products totaled US $ 227 million, consolidating an increase of 19% in relation to 2015. While the companies involved in the shipments amounted to 223 exporters.

"In these 5 years, there is statistical registration of exports of this category (2012 - 2016), the products that have shown the highest average annual growth rate have been strawberries (43%), rosehip oil (30%), blueberries (27%), raspberries (24%) among others“, the document specifies.

Products with greater growth

The report states that the national organic products that showed the highest growth percentages, during the 2016 / 2015 period, were fresh cranberries with an increase of 983%, followed by apple juice 761%, rosehip oil 175%, and frozen blueberries 61%.

Meanwhile, in the case of the subsectors of the organic category that have shown greater increases in amounts since the 2012 - 2016 year, blueberries stand out both frozen (+ US $ MM 42,1), and fresh blueberries (+ US $ MM 15,2) , as well as frozen raspberries (+ US $ MM 14,6), frozen blackberries (+ US $ MM 4,8), and rosehip oil (+ US $ MM 4).

Origins

It should be noted that according to the document, organic shipments were led in 2016 by the Bío Bío Region (25% of the total), followed by the O'Higgins (24%), Maule (22%), and Metropolitana (12%) regions. %).

Regarding the reasons for the growth of this type of exports, the Director of ProChile, Alejandro Buvinic, indicated that he would obey to a global increase in consumption of this type of products, derived from a tendency of people to consume healthier and friendlier products. with the environment.

Destination Markets

In terms of destination markets for Chilean organic products, North America is ranked first with 73% of the total, Europe (17%) and Asia (8%), mainly, and to a lesser extent, Latin America ( 2%) and Africa.

Now, the document adds that within the North American market, shipments to the United States reached US $ MM 148,5, and Canada encrypted US $ MM 16,8.

In Europe, shipments to the Netherlands (US $ MM 11,5), the United Kingdom (US $ MM 5,4) and Germany (US $ MM 4,1) stand out.

In Asia and Oceania, exports are mainly directed to New Zealand (US $ MM 4,9), China (US $ MM 4,6), and Japan (US $ MM 4,2).

Finally, in Latin America, Chilean organic products are directed towards Brazil (US $ MM1,6) and Mexico (US $ MM 1,6).
