Canada: Harvest time returns to "normal" for blueberries BC

The blueberry producers 700 of British Columbia (BC) are preparing to start harvesting fruit in the first week of July, which will be about four weeks later than the start of the season last year.

In a statement, the BC Blueberry Council said that this 2017 had been a cooler and more humid year compared to the last two seasons.

"Compared to the last couple of years, it looks like BC's blueberry season is starting later this year. But what we expect in 2017 is more in line with the calendar than what would be a "normal" harvest"Said Nancy Chong, president of the council.

"While the harvest will start later than last year, a good supply of high quality blueberries is expected, with the season extending until mid-September".

The council said that much cooler temperatures and more humid winter conditions had led to more work in the fields for producers, which makes it more difficult to go out to the orchards to take over tasks such as pruning.

"The months of October and November were a little warmer than usual, but much more humid than the average, and then, in December, we experienced a drastic drop in temperature and strong winds"Chong said.

"All these weather conditions generated effects followed during winter and spring".
