Argentina: Cranberry prices will be tighter due to the incursion of Peru

Between the 10 and the 15 in September, the first exports of blueberries from Tucumán will start, according to the producers' estimates. It is expected that, this season, around 5.500 tons of that product will leave from the Teniente Benjamín Matienzo airport.

In 2016, the production reached about 8.500 tons and was exported around 5.500. United States represented 74% of shipments; England, an 14%; the 10% the European continent and the 2% to the rest of the world.

"Tighter prices are expected due to Peru's strong foray into the market“said Francisco Estrada, head of the Association of Blueberry Producers of Tucumán (Apratuc).

"The campaign is a bit more advanced than last year, but time will tell if this acceleration continues or slows down“Estrada said.

According to the latest private data, the area cultivated until May of this year reached the 1.338 hectares, between Tucumán, Salta and Catamarca. In the province 1.123 hectares were registered, some 21 more than in 2016.

In Tucumán, the largest proportion of the fields were located in the departments of Monteros and Chicligasta, accumulating a total of 804 hectares between both locations, according to the survey of the sector in the NOA, which was presented weeks ago.
