Argentina expects a positive season for the blueberry

"We are very optimistic about our season, which will begin in September. As for our company, we work one hundred percent with the latest varieties of blueberries, such as Snowchaser, Emerald, Farthing, San Joaquín, Kestrel and Ventura. In addition, a very healthy and good quality production is foreseen“, admits Gabriel Wasserman, from Gramm Agropecuaria, Argentina.

Gabriel explains that his company has invested in special sorting technology. “This new sorting machine is able to sort according to size, softness, defects and color automatically. It is a new generation classification technology that will help us to increase the level of quality. There are markets like China that demand high quality, markets that prefer a different packaging or a constant product with the same size range".

"We will harvest our blueberries in September, October and November", keep going. This season the increase in maritime shipments from Argentina is important. “Our company had very good results last season, so we are striving to increase maritime shipments and, therefore, also the volumes exported by sea".

Argentina is in the final phase of opening the Chinese borders for the export of blueberries. “We are waiting for China to confirm the opening of its market, which is expected soon. However, Argentina has very good logistical connections with the Middle East, Singapore and Kuwait, among others. Also with our normal export destinations, such as Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada".

The Argentine season has the same window as the Peruvian season. Chile begins its season at the end of Argentina. “It is a complementary offer. The volume will grow, but on the other hand, the blueberry market has also grown and there is more demand around the world. In addition, Peru has permission to export to China, so part of its volume will be exported to this market. Argentina will increase maritime volumes, so I think there is a good chance that all exporting countries have a positive season".

"For this season we expect good prices, although they can be affected by many aspects, such as the weather, quality, volumes, demand, packaging, etc. Blueberries are not a commodity, they are a fruit with different requirements, varieties and flavors. There are customers for every type of blueberry. Our company offers fresh and frozen blueberries to the international market with the strictest quality standards in the sector, Global Gap, GlobalGrasp, HACCP and Tesco Nature. We work with individual traceability through a data collection system developed by our communications engineers in order to control the characteristics of each lot of harvested fruit.“Gabriel concludes.
