At 2021, exports of blueberries by Peru would exceed US $ 1.000 million

Within 4 or 5 years our country will dispatch 120 a thousand tons of blueberries and the challenge is to dispatch that offer in an orderly manner so as not to saturate the market, says specialist.

(Agraria.pe) Cranberry exports by Peru 2016 amounted to about US $ 250 million and the prospect is that the 2021 exceed US $ 1.000 million.

This was indicated by the general manager of Terra Business SAC, Federico Beltrán Molina, who indicated that currently Peru exports more than 24 one thousand tons and for the 2021 it will dispatch more than 120 thousand tons.

"This important growth is very positive because it generates many jobs"He said.

In that sense, he indicated that the country's great peacemaker is called Agriculture. "These are the businesses that are generating tranquility in Peru and it is the opportunity for many people to substantially improve their quality of life."He said.

He added that the good results obtained in producing regions such as Ica, Trujillo and Olmos, where there is zero unemployment, suggests that this reality can be extended to more regions. "We need more blueberries and more species like blueberries".

In this regard, he highlighted that our country, having a good reputation for respecting intellectual property (patented varieties) has the opportunity to receive new genetics from other species, as is happening.

Challenges

Federico Beltrán pointed out that one of the challenges that the Peruvian cranberry industry will face will be the orderly dispatch of the more than 120 thousand tons that it will export within 4 or 5 years.

"One thing is the commercial window and another is the absorption capacity of that window. Studies have indicated that delivering 10 a thousand tons of fresh products per week is the best way, so we should start working thinner our deliveries per week"He said.

He also said that the shipments of the Peruvian offer are very concentrated in the months of September and October, however it is already being sent in January-March and the tendency is to stretch the window.

"The ideal is to concentrate the harvest between September and November, maybe 60% or 70% and the rest in the following months. Let's maintain consistency and importers will continue to trust us for much of the Southern Hemisphere season"He commented.

Mexico, the competitor

The general manager of Terra Business SAC, pointed out that the commercial window of September and October is traditionally used by Mexico, which is emerging as the main competitor of Peru's blueberries.

"Over time, our blueberry production will be the same as Uruguay, Argentina and even Chile, however, if there is a country in the world that has similar or superior conditions to us to take advantage of the opportunities of the blueberry world, it is Mexico."He said.

He stressed that Mexico is very close to the large blueberry market that is the United States (two days by truck), also has ideal temperatures for production (minimum temperature is 4 degrees) and being a large country has many lands for the sowing of this crop (in Michoacán, Jalisco and Baja California the sowing of blueberries is very active).

"The consumption of blueberries in the markets is very active and increases at an average of 10%. The product is fashionable all over the world and there is no way to stop the growth of consumption. The market will continue to grow, but this must always be interpreted as a double reading, the greater the demand, the greater the supply and the prices will moderate"He finished.
